It's been a while

It's been a while since I've written. Before I attempt to comment on the National Health Reform debate, I wanted to share something about local politics. In Newton, MA we are having a Mayoral race with 5 candidates. I am supporting Rep. Ruth B. Balser. In July I published this letter about why I am supporting her in the local paper (Newton Tab).

To the Editor:

I was disappointed by recent opinion pieces which disparage the candidates for Newton Mayor. I am pleased with the quality of the candidates. All have convinced me they are deeply concerned about Newton. I support Ruth Balser. Balser is a strong leader who will bring a fresh perspective to the job of Mayor.

Listening to Ruth Balser at a recent House Party, I was inspired by the creativity of her ideas. Her approach to her constituents and potential constituents is welcome. She considers the ideas of experts on various subjects and brings people together. Running for office is also about stating who you are and what you can offer others as well as listening to others’ view on every subject.

The work Balser has put into the Mayoral campaign so far is enormous. People ask, “How is Balser different from previous mayors?” Any comparison to other Mayors of Newton is shortsighted and discounts her work on Newton’s behalf over the previous ten years as both Alderwoman and State Representative.

Whether or not Balser is an expert in municipal finance will not make her an effective or ineffective mayor. Who she consults, what she learns and what decisions she makes will make the difference.

Ruth Balser has much to recommend her. She has private sector experience as a manager in mental health services. She also has extensive experience examining issues and overseeing staff. Male CEOs are not the only good candidates. Ruth Balser is a team player and a champion.

As long as Ruth Balser continues to state why she is running for Mayor, why she believes she is qualified and show that she is listening to the city's residents, she will be a strong contender. The citizens of Newton have a unique opportunity this September to express their opinions and needs to a new, well-qualified individual.

I can't believe it! This is definitely a dream come true!

I am so excited by Barack Obama's win that I've decided to start this blog. I can't contain my thoughts. I'm overjoyed. And I believe Obama will be great. He is already much better than B. Clinton in my eyes-- and I was excited about Clinton's election in 1993. This makes living in America with all the troubles we have and all the troubles we caused (via our government, corrupt corporations and the war in Iraq) palatable. Of course it doesn't absolve them. But it gives me hope.

On Boston.com today, I found some terrific front page photos and headlines detailing Obama's victory that appeared around the country.
